Celebrations For The 1,350th Anniversary

This section is a record of the celebratory events that took place during the year of the 1,350th anniversary of the founding of the monastery in 678AD between the Feast of St. Bede on 25th May 2023 and 30th June 2024.

25^th May, 2023 at 6 p.m.

A Celebration Eucharist marking the Feast of St. Bede was held.

29^th June – 2^nd July 2023

There was a Garden Party.

August 2023

A ‘Songs of Praise’ type service with the local Salvation Army was held.

30^th September 2023

Wearmouth Lecture. Professor Michelle Brown – former Curator of Medieval Illuminated manuscripts at British Library gave a fascinating talk.

19th November 2023

There was a Rock Mass with the Rock Choir.

12^th January 2024

A celebration service for  Benedict Biscop, patron saint of Sunderland, was held, attended by the Mayor.

25th May 2024

A Celebrate the Feast of Venerable Bede service was held.

30^th June 2024
